In the folds of remote mountains, stories travel quietly from voice to voice. Old traditions and folklore intertwines with conspiracy theories and military presence. It’s a world where legend and reality are never far apart.
In the silence of isolation, a candle flickers and visions begin to form. Fragments of a future that no-one else can see emerge and become indistinguishable. Was it prophecy or induced imagination?
Within every mind lies an observatory from which we watch the world and ourselves. Some discoveries bring understanding; others reveal how easily we can lose our way. We think, we feel, we laugh, we cry….our lives are fragile.
A descent into a time of fear, belief and accusation defined by superstition. A world where no-one was beyond suspicion and the fragility of truth was shaped by power and greed.
Beneath the grandeur of progress and discovery lie stories of courage, sacrifice and loss. Era revisits a time of extraordinary change, where light and shadow walked side by side.
A journey into hidden worlds where ancient beliefs, forbidden knowledge and whispered traditions still linger beneath the surface. You are invited into a world where not everything can be explained. Some doors, once opened, are difficult to close.
Far beyond the familiar reaches of space, unexpected encounters offer new knowledge and a different perspective on time itself. Yet, the longing for home remains stronger than the pull of the stars.
One voice dares to challenge a world. A story of rebellion and the struggle to be heard but as hope gathers momentum, unseen forces begin to close in from every direction. Even the strongest voices can fade into silence.
This song was written after I sustained a back injury. I sneezed whilst bending over cleaning my teeth! I know—rock and roll! But it was exceptionally painful. I ended up unable to sit for three weeks. I could only stand or lie down, and that’s where the opening words of the song came from. I already had the acoustic guitar riff kicking around, and the rest just kind of wrote itself. I loved how the guitar solo at the end turned out. I really wrung the emotion out for that one. There’s an almost complete video for this too. I might get round to finishing it one day.
When one traveller turns his back on a troubled world, the universe reveals wonders beyond imagination. Yet even among the stars, the search for home is never quite over.
I wrote this after a massive and deeply traumatic life change. I was in a dark place. I had released a number of things before this, but hadn’t really taken hold of the grief and anger and let them out. I’m not sure what the catalyst was, but this was the result: five almost instrumental tracks, with sparse piano soaked in reverb over a desperate industrial soundscape. This was also the first time I’d put the Korg Triton through plugin effects, which led to some gloriously nasty sounds.
I’ve always loved the instrumental rock albums of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Marc Bonilla and Jan Cyrka, so I thought I’d try my hand at one. It was more difficult than I’d envisaged. I’d been working on an instrumental album for years without getting anywhere near finishing it, but I was determined to complete one—and eventually I did. The catalyst was buying my Kemper Profiler. The new sounds at my disposal were hugely inspiring. This was also the first album on which I used the FabFilter plugin suite. Only three pre-existing songs made it onto the album. Pure Release had been written as an instrumental several years earlier but remained unfinished. I already had most of Beyond Europa, while The Killing Man was a rejected Conspires To song that originally had lyrics. They all sounded miles better when re-recorded using the Kemper. Everything else was written specifically for the album. I was really getting into Rick Beato’s videos at this point. They gave me new things to think about and musical avenues to explore, so thanks, Rick!
Beneath endless skies and across frozen horizons, the music retraces a journey that became legend. An atmospheric collection shaped by exploration, endurance and the cost of pursuing the impossible.
13 Trinity Drive was my first full-blown solo album, but its story began long before the music. It started as a book I attempted to write in 1991, when I was 19, inspired by an experience four years earlier that has stayed with me ever since. I was on a family holiday at Tinker’s Cottage in Boscastle, Cornwall—an old, thick-walled cottage that had apparently been modernised in the 1500s. There wasn’t enough room for everyone upstairs, so, as the oldest child, I slept downstairs on my own. One night, I got up for a glass of water. Walking through the lounge towards the kitchen, I saw an old woman sitting in a rocking chair in the far corner. She was dressed in black, with a white frill around her neck, old lace-up boots and grey hair scraped back into a bun. She stared straight at me, without expression or emotion. I had the overwhelming feeling that she could see me. I slowly turned and walked out. As I turned my back, I heard the chair creak as she began to rock. I went straight back under the covers, heart racing, hardly daring to breathe. Whatever I witnessed that night, it made a lasting impression and fuelled my fascination with the paranormal. That experience, followed a couple of years later by reading James Herbert’s The Magic Cottage, inspired me to write a book. It turns out that writing a book is considerably harder than it looks! Rather than abandon the idea entirely, I eventually turned it into an album. Considerably easier!! 13 Trinity Drive follows a young couple who feel inexplicably compelled to buy a house. What they don’t realise is that something inside has been drawing them there—and has plans for its new occupants. As the disturbances intensify and the house begins to reveal its secrets, the couple turn to a spiritual cleanser for help. Unfortunately, his confidence far exceeds his abilities, and the presence waiting inside is about to put both to the test. Told through heavy guitars, acoustic passages and extended instrumental sections, this is a story of fear, deception and two people discovering what they are prepared to face together.
An album about the pandemic, a decade before the pandemic. This was my Baba Yaga moment when I foresaw the future and predicted the events of the future with frightening accuracy. Symbiosis is about a lab in Dresden (ground zero) where they are trying to eradicate genetic diseases. But the symbiotic bond between healthy cells and diseases is not fully understood. Breaking these bonds releases a deadly virus into the atmosphere. Millions die. The hero of the album so realises while people are dying all around him he is not being affected. By shear luck he has a genetic mutation that protects him. He must search for others like him, and rebuild civilisation.
